A Day in the Life
With the stormy weather adding some extra chaos today, it felt like the perfect opportunity to share what a typical day at Designed with a Twist looks like. From pouring silicone to packing orders, it’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how we bring your crafting supplies to life.
First off, can we just discuss how cute the new baby dragon mould is —I’m obsessed! If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check it out in our new Enchanted collection. Of course as usual there is a nice little discount code hidden away for you, but don’t wait around – this one runs out midnight on Thursday 30th January!
But for now, grab a warm drink, and let’s dive into a behind-the-scenes look at our day!
Today started with a battle through the wild weather and flying wheelie-bins, to get into the office. After warming up with a much-needed hot drink and switching on the heater, it was time to jump into the day.
The morning kicked off with demoulding moulds from the previous day, while Jess worked her way through emails, queries and shipping updates. It’s always satisfying to match up the freshly demoulded moulds to their orders and move any completed orders to the “To Be Wrapped” table.
Next on the list was setting up for a new pour. I cleared away any blanks that weren’t needed for the next batch and laid out the ones needed to fulfil the next orders. Prioritising any repeat designs is super important, especially if we only have one blank, my new heat bed is definitely the hero — speeding up the setting process to help us stay on schedule. Then, it’s time to mix and pour the silicone, focusing on the most urgent repeats first and working through all the blanks until the whole table is fully poured.
While the silicone sets, Jess and I make a start wrapping the moulds demoulded earlier, while Corinne and John are working behind the scenes – designing customs, new products, wax testing moulds, social media posts and planning next week’s Enchanted-themed releases.
Of course, we stop for lunch! Which usually entails a spirited debate of some kind, whether its super serious or interpreting the lyrics to the latest song that’s constantly on the radio. Today’s hot topic APT – Rosé & Bruno Mars. Jess is a K-Pop girly and was educating the rest of us.
After lunch, we checked on the silicone moulds, making sure to resist the urge to poke at half-set silicone (it’s messier than you’d think!). Once the silicone is fully set, the fresh moulds were demoulded and matched to their orders. Any repeats still needed were re-poured to keep everything on track.
A new addition to my routine is writing this blog. Normally, I’d set aside time on a Thursday while moulds are setting, but it all depends on the workload. With the storm really starting to kick in, today, Corinne and John sent us home early and kindly allowed us to work from home for the rest of the day providing the perfect time to write. It’s a change of pace, but there’s nothing like being kept on your toes!
Usually by 3:30pm, the workspace turns into a packing hub. Orders are boxed, labelled, and sent on their way to their new homes. Seeing the final products ready to ship is always the perfect way to end the day, and we have a little internal mission to keep trying to hit new record amounts of parcels sent. It’s a nice way to keep it fun.
Hope you enjoyed our glimpse into our usual workday!
Stay safe out there, everyone—otherwise, you might just get swept away by the wind like Dorothy! Very fitting for our enchanted theme, don’t you think?
